There comes a time in every actor’s life that one role he/she does redefines their careers and the future road map of their lives. It happened with Robert Downey Jr. with Iron Man, John Travolta with Pulp Fiction, Drew Barrymore with Charlie’s Angels and so on. But rarely that I have seen an actor who was not really into the mainstream media nor was really interested in mainstream movie but still delivered one of the best movies of all times, despite almost all of them with an unconventional story.
I am of course talking about Keanu Reeves, who has not only come back with one of the best movies of 2017 (although the year has just started but I doubt there would be another like this one). Keanu Reeves is one actor who never believed in “Stardom” and always was shy from paparazzis & tabloids. He has no scandals, outrageous misbehavings or for that matter anything which would link him up into entertainment news. The most anyone would see will be some strings of recent unconventional movies which did not do well at box office.
The sequel’s trailer was received with higher expectations and boy ‘o boy, it does exceed all expectations.
Starting with Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures, one of his early hits, to Speed, Devil’s Advocate, Matrix, Constantine & landing on John Wick in 2014. From the day first John Wick movie trailer hit the scene, Reeves fans went crazy and the success of the movie proved his par-excellence performance. The hue and cry for a sequel was soon heard and it was announced to be released in late 2016, which was then shifted to now in 2017. The sequel’s trailer was received with higher expectations and boy ‘o boy, it does exceed all expectations.
The trailer is not even the tip of the iceberg
Talking about the story, John Wick: Chapter 2 is one of those movie which reminds you of what real action movie is all about. A movie about principles (not Transporter principles) and a will to keep fighting for survival is what it is all about. The first movie ended with John avenging the death of his Dog and we could see him survive, what one can call, one of the most thrilling and brutal action scenes in recent times. Chapter 2 starts of from a sequence that John is after someone and we soon get to know that he still had unfinished business from the first movie, that was, to get back his car too. Once done, he is then encountered by one of his old colleague (remember John was a hitman/assassin in his past professional life). He is given a choice to do a job for him and ends up having a bounty set on his head. How John goes through the entire process saving his own life and how it all ends is what this movie is all about.
About the action sequences and direction, this movie is what benchmark’s a straight shooter. Chad Stahelski has outdone himself with this sequel with exceptionally well choreographed gun fight and hand to hand combat scenes. Keanu’s Jujitsu training can be clearly seen in many of the fight scenes where he has performed the stunts with tremendous ease. The shooting locations were similar to what we saw in John Wick 2014. I truly don’t know what Chad will have in store for us in Chapter 3 (right now I’m 110% sure there will be one and secretly praying that there is one)
The movie is all and all Keanu Reeves and nothing else. I could not find a single scene where I was not focused or thought about taking a break. It is over 2 hours long and from get go to the very end it will keep you on the edge of your seats. If you thought that trailer may have given out the story then you are in for a surprise as the trailer is not even the tip of the iceberg you will see.
In the end, this is a classic in every sense and I am now eagerly waiting for the third part as the story does not end here and I am sure that the writer has already penned John Wick: Chapter 3, ready to be released somewhere around mid 2018. This series needs a satisfying end and I am sure once you watch it, you will agree to my statement. A must watch for all the action movies fans and especially for those who think Marvel and DC heroes are the ones to chant for.
