Director: Greg Mottola
Why is it that Hollywood has stopped producing quality comedy movie in recent times? My guess is that with the explosion of Superhero movies and reliance on CGI has to be blamed for the writers block. Yes there are movies which actually did stand out in 2016 like Deadpool, Central Intelligence & Ride Along 2 are some of the honorable mentions but overall 2016 was not a good year for comedies (keeping out the animated movies).
Keeping up with the Joneses only has a name similarity with Keeping up with the Kardashians and nothing else. Anyone expecting a cameo appearance by the “booty” family will be disappointed.
The story is simple and about a couple Jeff & Karen Geffney (played by Zach Galifianakis & Isla Fisher), living in a suburban. Jeff is in HR of a tech corporation specializing in making computer chips. Jeff is portrayed to be a simple man with no ambitions and his wife Karen is an architect who somehow is designing urinals only. Anyway, the remaining neighborhood is a typical bunch of losers who pretend to be friends and stuff. One day, the house in front of Jeff’s house is sold to a new couple. Karen is intrigued and start to spy on them. They turn out to be a Tim and Natalie Jones, a high achiever and happy go lucky passionately in love couple. These roles are played by Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot.
Eventually it turns out that the new neighbors are actually spies and are investigating Jeff’s company because someone used Jeff’s computer at work and connected with international terrorists for selling the micro chips.
Till here the story is fine and a little funny but then it just crashes down on it’s face. Don’t get me wrong, I love comedies but now I’ve started to think that any movie with Zach Galifianakis cannot be carried by him alone. The recent example the previous review of “Masterminds“.
If we look at the entire movie then only Gal Gadot stands out and that is not because of her acting skills (which are never noticed) but because she is smoking hot in this movie. There is a scene between Gal Gadot and Isla Fisher in which both are in their lingerie in a shop. Gal Gadot has had an amazing year in 2016 with major appearances in movies like Batman Vs. Superman, Criminal & Triple 9. She also bagged the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.
Isla Fisher is good and somewhat hot for plus size women but at times I though she was putting too much effort into her character. What can I say, that is just me. Jon Hamm on the other hand played the role of a spy effortlessly and I wonder why this talented “Mad Men” fame actor doesn’t get any action movies. He could very well be the next Tom Cruise replacement.
Overall the movie was better than Masterminds and it is a decent watch on the weekends. I would rate it higher than Masterminds also because no Owen Wilson is present in this one. Just watch it for the Wonder Woman if nothing else.
