History of Westworld story goes back to 1973 when a movie with the same name appeared in Cinemas and became and instant hit. It boasted the cast of Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin & Jame Brolin. It was directed by Michael Crichton.
The movie was about a man-made western town which was populated by humanoids (man made realistically looking robots). Anyone could pay $1,000 per day and do whatever they liked and I mean whatever without fearing any retaliation or consequences. So the story goes as expected that those humanoids go against the actual humans and then there’s a killing spree and a rogue robot leader how gets killed in the end. This movie was followed up by a sequel “Futureworld” in 1976 and a forgettable TV series “Beyond Westworld” in 1980. To sum up the background story, Westworld always had a remake value and given today’s advancement in A/V tech, now seemed the most appropriate time for HBO to come up with it.
A Brave New World
The new Westworld TV series has an abundance of star cast with most noteworthy being Sir Anthony Hopkins. He’s the real star of the show and the central character for the series. Others include Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton & James Marden. With such a star cast, one would expect nothing less than perfection and to achieve that we have J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan (Christopher Nolan’s brother) & Lisa Joy (Spouse Jonathan Nolan) . The series is based on the original story by Michael Crichton but penned by Jonathan & Lisa.
The character build up is very well defined and at the end of the season, pretty much all the puzzles fit in perfectly.
The series started slow with a story build-up of who’s who in it but it soon took off with an exhilarating pace unfolding drama after drama. Every episode brought in a new character and elaborated on the old ones with slight back story where ever needed. Viewers started coming up with their own theories of what has happened in each episode and expectations of the next. The character build up is very well defined and at the end of the season, pretty much all the puzzles fit in perfectly. There are few dull moments in the series which I think should have been taken down just to keep up with the pace.
Looking at the characters, I think Sir Anthony Hopkins deserves all praises for being the best at what he does. His magical presence and persona highlights the depth of his character and towards the end of the season the struggles he has been through to keep the place running with his ingenious story lines for customers. There are many surprises as well and for me they shine on the brilliance of screenplay by Nolan & Joy.
“What if the technology we create develops consciousness and go against us?”
Westworld brings forward the real face of every human. We all have our fantasies and we all have an animal hiding within our souls. This theme park brings that character out from hiding and brings it right in our faces. If the world becomes a place without consequences, only then these characteristics come out and Westworld is the only place where humans could go and do whatever they wanted without fearing any consequences. It may just be a show for entertainment but beneath it is the reality of lives. Imagine, just for one day if the world is declared open without consequences, how would you react? You would fulfill your deepest darkest fantasies. Luckily, it only exists on TV or in movies. The show highlights one key point which has been lurking in our minds for ages that’s “what if the technology we create develops consciousness and go against us?”
The first season has now ended so for those who haven’t watched it yet, must take out one week and indulge in binge watching this classic show. It is rated 16+ so beware of extensive nudity & foul language being used in each episode.
